What free wood did you find today?

We have a hydro dam (actually several) here along the New River. This one was built in 1903ish. I talked to the guy that is over the dam and had heard about some old wood used in bearings so I asked about it. I was able to get four blocks of Lignum Vitae that was used as bearing pillow blocks in the plant. These are freakin heavy. They now use phenolic block due to the price. Picture heavy. This stuff cuts easier than I thought it would. It has a distinct scent to it too.

You’re holding out on me Warden………they won’t sound good, trust me, I know……..you can’t have a tear or break on speaker cones…. 😉

And grabbed a couple 3×6 old growth heart pine that came out of the floor of the old cotton mill. One about 2' and one about 4' long

If you ever plan on putting some up for grabs I’d definitely be willing to buy or trade for a small piece.

Neighbor had part of a Red bud fail in our snow storm Friday. Said I could have the wood. Lost reverse plowing that day. Maybe I can use the school van to get it....

Crab apples can get 30" at DBH. Why do you think his is big?
Mark, I know you know those damn tree things, but are you sure about that? I can't find anything that suggest that crab apple trees get that big and like Chuck, I didn't think that the do.

I've seen some big ones here in Michigan. They are short and don't get very tall but an old tree can get pretty big in diameter at the butt log. Often times they are hollow though.

Thanks Greg. I was basing my opinion on height. Didn't realize that, like me, they get large down below the crown.
