What free wood did you find today?

Found this in the swap shop at the dump this morn, lots of pen blanks or… Made in India, Cocobolo maybe, any idea what this very dense wood is?

spent 2 weeks in oregon down by port orford, south of bandon. picked up this log off the beach. appears to be curly or quilted redwood?
@Mike1950 can probably tell. was 12 foot long had to cut it in half to load it on the utv to get it off the beach. about 20 to 24" diameter, it's on the back and side of the trailer in last picture

so the truck bed is half full with oak limb burls and spruce rounds, the box on the trailer is filled with various figured driftwood, the 2 logs and then the bed of the UTV has 3 large pieces of driftwood including one myrtle stump piece. and there is a redwood root/stump piece on the trailer between the front of the UTV and the quad, just arrived back in vegas at 6pm sunday, 1000 mile drive from oregon coast to home, over 3 days. could possibly have saved 50 miles through california, but there is no way they would have let me through the agriculture check station

Congrats! What a haul! You are absolutely right about California ag stations. They gave me a terrible time once when I brought in lumber from out of State. Very wise decision to avoid… ALWAYS! Chuck

Way cool. I assumed you planned this and have done it before. Did you pre-survey the area, or you just know where to find all the cool wood? Is permission or permit needed?

Awesome Trev! We visited Fort Brag in Norcal a couple of years ago, was amazed at all the trees and snags on the beach, would have loved to pick some up like you did, I only got a few small pieces I carried out by hand...

oregon law states that no chainsaws or mechanical means of loading can be used, without a permit. but on beaches any wood that can be carried/picked up can be removed. spoke to one of the park rangers on the way out and we had only hand loadable sized pieces, permitted utv, with flag, and no other mechanical devices. "All good"

this particular stretch of beach is north of the mouth of the elk river, due west of sixes oregon, south of the cape blanco light house. just over the bluff from my inlaws house. the elk river empties a large area associated with logging and provides a fair amount of new driftwood every flood season. if you google maps search "cape blanco light house" you can see the sheer volume of wood on the beach.

Dang it! Once again they forgot to tell you about and enforce the addendum that states "10% of all recovered wood from Oregon beaches must be remitted to DLJeffs for inspection and possible usage." I'll assume you'll do the honorable thing and expect to received a box in the mail soon.

Don't forget about the last addendum that says all purdy/curly/quilty stuff goes to Middle Tennessee. But he ain't gonna drive that far!!
