What free wood did you find today?

Very nice, but I think that fish carving is way too nice looking to be left outside to weather and crack.

Looking forward to cutting up this big chunk of Maple. Wasn’t exactly free, but came from a local firewood production place close to home. The guys charge me minimal $$. They will cut to manageable size and load into my truck. I might have to go back and get the other half??

Another 14” x 4” bowl blank from the big piece of Norway Maple.
Looks promising…..

That outer wrinkle just tells you the amount of energy that is going on inside and looking forward to the progress and finished product.
Got the outside shaped anyway. Going to core one or two out of it. Maybe today???
My mom (who recently celebrated her 90th) is coming over for dinner today! 😀

Wow- core it baby! :sarcastic: I mentioned in another post that I have not seen Norway maple in lumber form available- I posted a tree marked here in Brooklyn heights. Give us a scoop as far as working with it- working properties in between soft red and hard maple? I know I mentioned to you, that this wood species was used by Stradivari.

Is your Mom going to get a piece of this for her belated birthday?

I would say comparable to silver Maple. No huge ribbons, off the gouge, like some Maple throws, but decent shavings. I found this huge piece at the firewood lot, so might have been sitting a while since it was cut. I never checked moisture content, but it’s not very wet.

I have another piece of the log still to be processed. I’ll call you out @Arn213 if I find a piece that’s this good and save it for you.

The last picture is proof of life for my cedar claims this weekend.

I cut the bookmatch as close to the dead center as possible. This was a smaller branch area so any chance of medullary rays had to be carefully planned.
There is another bookmatch on the one outside edge but it is blah. Probably cut the first outer piece into pen blanks since it is decently spalted

You will get to build something nice with the bm set (bench perhaps and center seam it at the wider crotch section) Frank @2feathers Creative Making:
