What's in the mail?

Visited a woodworking friend in Lincoln, CA, and he generously gave me some of his “extras,” a rabbet plane, a heat gun, and an electric tester. Chuck

These came from D-Way today, their new full 1/4“ m42 parting tool. Use it like a skew for refining the radius on production work.

Wasn't in the mail, but one of my former co-workers put my retirement gift in our mailbox yesterday. I retired in March, this got finished in April, but every time i saw him he couldn't find it in his vehicle!! (gym bags, diaper bags, brief cases, etc.) Locally made, obvoiusly Damascus, and he had the guy use cocobolo as one of the scale woods. The bad news is that the leather sheath his maker made for it discolored the steel. I can live with that, unless EEE or something else might clean it up and do no harm. First time with Damascus, definitely love it--and was truly in shock when i opened the bag!!

I honestly can’t figure out why the blade turned that color, I’ve never had that happen before on a knife. If you want to clean it, just don’t use anything abrasive or you could mess up the dark finish of the damascus. As for what type of cleaner, try whatever you like, I would stay away from anything acidic. If you do use something acidic, was the blade with soapy water as soon as you’re done or it could discolor the damascus. Hope this helps!

He probably still has some left he’d be willing to part with, if you are that interested. I do designs completely for free, so we could always work on it over time.

I'll think on that for a bit. We've got an old rusty kitchen butcher knife that has been out of service for several years...maybe time to replace it.

Thanks for the thoughts on the lock-back. I think i'm just going to leave it and use it!!

Any leather but, generally, veg tanned has the capability of causing discoloration if in contact with the blade. Any leather, if gains moisture, will cause some rust. But as this is a folder, the blade is not in contact. But since the bolsters seem to be affected, they were probably in contact. As far as cleaning - if not damascus, pretty straightforward, but Damascus have no idea without affecting the etching/staining and having to redo it.
 
Yeah, it was pretty clearly leather contact that was the cause--that one picture shows an unmarked spot where the rivet for the belt loop was. Like i said, i'm not going to fret on it and use it. Really may have been a blessing as if it was pristine i'd probably have been hesitant to make it a user!!
 
About Thursday of last week, November 30, I received a bolt action pen from @Tclem. I took pictures, but between my phone and computer, I can't get them uploaded to WB. I've had this on an off problem for about 4-5 months, but it's gotten worse.

Anyway, no pictures so possibly didn't really happen, right Tony? Thanks to You and Paxton. Beautiful pen. One thing I did was to try to open it to see what refill I would need later on, but couldn't get anything to unscrew. ................. Jerry
