Yup I know the feeling. When I find extra pencils, utility knives, and tape measures I toss them into the workbench tray. I'm pretty good at keeping track of pencils as I usually keep one behind my ear but after a few days they all migrate from the shop to the house. My wife puts them in an old coffee mug, when I run out I grab a handful and carry them back to the shop.
