A Joke a Day Keeps The Boredom Away . . .

Hope you weren't a center. I played nose guard and going up against 160# to 175# centers were rather fun! Usually had to go against a bunch of double teaming!
Nope, left guard. Used to run a huge amount of counter plays and I spent a lot of time pulling and lead blocker for running backs. We were a 1A school, the smallest school designation. Fewer than 350 in our high school.

That sounds like my high school (at that time). I played tackle both ways at 175. We went 38-1-1 in four years, but that was all thanks to coaches who believed in conditioning. And even those of us who didn't live on farms ended up baling hay every summer!!

Yeah, very similar. Bailing hay, hauling bales and buckets of corn and wrestling steers. Don't remember any of us ever lifting weights, no time for that, everybody was too busy working - chores at home for most of us, or part time jobs for the town kids.

This was for a town of 12,000 at the time, but it was a county-wide school, so we were 4A, but the smallest one. Hauling bales, wrestling steers was part of our training regime as well as hauling bags of feed for the feed mill or working at the rebar mill. I was new to the town, arriving just before my freshman year. I was 6'1" (almost) and 245#. First day of school, within 4 hours, the coaches had heard about the new big guy and was asking him if he'd like to play under "Texas Friday Night Lights". Unfortunately we were one of the smallest 4A schools, but had to play these huge San Antonio 4A - now 5A schools. We had 1,500, they had 5,000+. We played all who came out for football - they had tryouts. Did ok until, would get into playoffs, get to quarterfinals and lose to the same huge San Antonio school. We also played them during regular season - lost all 4 times. Lost to them 8 times. But they had a bunch of guys who went on to play at 1A college teams, 2 went on to play NFL and one went on to play MLB. We had 2 guys that went to 1A. The town was all about HS football. Our head coach was also President of the Texas State HS Coaches assoc. He had and enforced training rules - no beer, curfews, etc..... But to make his job easier, the town also watched over us and would turn us in for breaking training rules. It wasn't pleasant when you did.

We also ran a lot of counter plays. I did not like playing teams like that as the play was always going away from me and I was chasing. Three teams we played ran the wishbone. Liked playing them. I'd feel the double team, stand my ground and cut off the dive option.

For anyone else who is getting coal for Christmas.
Maybe we can link up and throw it in the smoker and smoke some brisket!
Having grown up in a house where coal was used for winter heat, I would think coal smoked brisket would be refused even by a hungry dog.
