You’ll enjoy that one. What are you gonna make with it?
Another decoration for my lumber storage rack? 😄

I have no clue what I'll use it for. I've just been buying wood for several months without using anything at all lol. I actually just got back into the shop tonight to work on a gift for my dad. I haven't worked on anything in months. Took me like 2 solid days just to clean up the mess that was in my shop before i could even start.

I don't mean to stir things up after this sale has already occurred, but is that burl cap *actually* amboyna? I've bought more amboyna than any one person should reasonably buy, but I don't think I've ever seen any with that kind of grain pattern and drying checks. However, the color and grain looks identical to many Aussie burls such as coolibah. It almost looks like it could be a cap off the same tree that this one sold at my local exotic wood dealer is selling now.

Again, I don't mean to call anyone out or anything. I like the intellectual discussion aspect of this forum, so I thought I'd ask. It certainly could have been sold as amboyna to the OP and it is often difficult to perfectly identify burls. Heck, maybe I'm completely off-base myself! If everyone is happy, that's all that matters between the buy and seller. I know I've bought mystery wood that I liked for no other reason than its looks and physical qualities and I didn't give a hoot about what it was called or where it came from because it was so attractive.

I know next to nothing about burls, so I'm relying on Fred here. I don't think Fred is trying to pull a fast one, but who knows about the guy who sold him this. We still haven't finalized this sale. I know Fred is dealing with some things right now. Hopefully he gets a chance to chime in soon, though I'm not in a rush.

@Big Ry @hokie I originally got this off eBay originally to use as part of my dad’s memorial/urn. I ended up finding something I like better so decided to sell this at a bit of a lose just to get it out of the way. Amboyna comes in a wide variety of colors from what I’ve seen. This ones doesn’t have the prominent red orange color of some. The Seller sold it as Amboyna. I can’t 100% say for certain it is. I do see some similarities to some of the reddish brown tinted Eucalyptus burls. The Seller I got it from is pretty well known and reputable on ebay so I’d be willing to bet he labeled it correctly. But without seeing the tree it came from, the only other way would be to send a piece of it to a lab

the seller I believe goes by the name Midwest wood supply.

Unless my fellow hokie is going to present a compelling argument to why this isn't amboyna, i dont have any issue trusting Fred's judgement. There has to be some degree of uncertainty with some of these things it seems

Coincidentally, eBay is the reason I am so skeptical now about what is or isn't amboyna. In my early wood hunting days, I bought "amboyna" from an eBay seller named "BigMikey" (or something like that). It took me a while to realize I had actually bought red mallee and there were warnings sprinkled throughout his feedback alleging similar misrepresentations. Even here on woodbarter: https://woodbarter.com/threads/closed-amboyna-burl.43818/post-613596

I can't offer any more evidence or arguments for what is what other than my experience and seeing the pics. All that matters in this case is that everyone is happy. For anyone else that is keen on discussing the nuances of this kind of thing, I thought it would be an interesting conversation.

I guess i missed this. Not raining on anyone's parade but that is an aussie burl. Definitely not amboyna. Ebay sellers are notorious for selling red mallee or red coolibah as amboyna. For a while when amboyna was high they sold a lot.
I only say something to make sure the initial miss representation does not continue.

@hokie already mentioned this above. It seems that Fred couldn't be positive that it was ambuya, but i justified it by saying that $60 is a good deal for most any burl this size in the retail space.

I have to ask though... How are you guys so positive that it's not ambuya? When it comes to hardwoods, the conventional wisdom is that it's virtually impossible to definitively ID a species without (at a minimum) a close up shot of end grain sanded to 400. Some others still need additional details like weight or scent factored in. It's my understanding that burls are even harder to ID than regular wood, so how would one know for sure what burl this is with only a few general overview photos? Ambuya is not even a single species from my understanding. It encompasses narra, Burmese padauk, and a few others from what I've read. I'm fine if it's not in fact ambuya, but it just seems like those statements were issued without enough information to confirm.

For what it's worth, it's pretty heavy. It's the heaviest burl i own (not that i own many lol). It's much heavier than the red mallee that's also pictured above. It's certainly heavier than maple burl. And it's possibly heavier than the red gum burl i have too. I'll have to check on scent later.

How? I have 2 crates with 1500 lbs each. Aussie burl. I have owned a few thousand lbs of amboyna.
The cracks. 100% tell. Amboyna might crack but not like that.
Ebay amboyna is in infamous.
You as a a buyer have to try to fight and fight hard against bargain priced amboyna at 1/3 the price.

And to add multiple folks have questioned this. This NEVERS happens here. No bashing on prices rule.
I am proud of younger folks saying hold it. Not easy.

Being that I’ve never owned Amboyna before apperantly this time either. It’s d have to go with what they say. I got it for $85 in an auction and thought I was lucky. I guess I’m going to have to avoid that seller from now on.

If it’s an Eucalyptus I’d have to say it’s probably coolibah. I found a Coolibah burl on Australian burls.com that’s similar in size for $127.

@Big Ry if you want to sort something out about this, please let me know.

This issue already came up before we finalized the deal, so it was already on my radar. And like I said, I rationalized it by saying the price was good regardless of the type of burl so I went for it anyway. I'm sure we'll do more business in the future, so you can just break me off a little extra of whatever I buy next if you feel so inclined 😁

Those are all good points, and for the record I do believe you that it isn't Ambuyna. But it still doesn't address the main issue of not having much data to work with. I mean, isn't it possible that there could be some highly unusual or atypical looking pieces of ambuyna out there?

I have never seen the spelling ambuyna. It still refers the burl of pterocarpus species right? Or am I missing something?
Anyway I hate to correct someone but I think it’s spelled amboyna.
