happens to most all of us. It is why sometimes I will say it is marked Koa but ???? The amboyna thing on ebay is a known problem- ebay has not done one thing about it. and it has been going on for years...
Devil is in the detail. Aussie points are considerably more pointed. Blood thirsty little beggars.
Hey only working on my experience and knowledge. Can I be wrong, more times then I like to admit. But the cracks are aussie and I bet if you sand off it will id easy.
Folks, I always hesitate to correct species. But this one is pet peeve, the low life scumbag is buying crates of cheap low quality aussie marking up to bargain priced amboyna and making 10 -$15 a lb. I have had people ask why is yours so much more. Mine is amboyna is the answer.
Could all the people that say it is not be wrong, absolutely. But we are not wrong.

Yeah i hear you about the scumbags on eBay and elsewhere. I've seen a few trying to pass off common species as premium wood or rare species. Or perhaps more sinister is those who hide defects or misrepresent grading or condition. I got a couple board feet of chakre kok from a big supplier down south and it arrived full of worm holes and punky areas. They made it right, but only because i called about it.
If you are buying from unknown seller, have him clean up part of face. And the old adage applies, if price is too good to be true, it probably is not true.
Problem is most i buy online. I don't get much opportunity to go to the handful of dealers in my area. I barely even leave home as it is lol
Yep service is what happens after things go south. I went to sell redwood curl a few days ago, it was sold. Took it inside to wrap, I always try to re examine in the better light, yikes bug holes and little cracks. Just be honest. He thanked me and we went off to another piece. Not like i/others do not make mistakes but your biz plan should have honest at number 1 in plan.
Get to know sellers. Ask sellers you like, who else is good. I know if I do not have i will tell you who does.
After many purchases I've found who i think are the good retailers. And the truth is that it depends. Ocooch is my go to. They are far and away the best bang for buck. They're cheaper than local suppliers even when shipping is factored in. Selection is small though, and their aromatic cedar isn't good. I also like Bell Forest, but they are pretty expensive. Turners circle on ebay has really high quality wood, though they are fairly pricey. For certain species, rare Woods is good. For a very narrow selection of species in blanks only, exotic wood zone can be great for sale pricing. And woodworkers source has had great quality wood, but shipping takes foooorever! That bad chakte kok can't from The Wood Yard, and although it was bad the rest of my order was good quality. Many other suppliers I've had neutral experiences with. Only a few have been bad, such as cooks.
Maybe it’s time to formulate a list of good and bad sellers for all to see on WB. Chuck

I normally do not try to refer people out of WB.
And I have no clue how many big leaf suppliers i have gone through. 30-50. Suppliers go from bad to worse, good to bad to gone almost as fast as you can list. I think a list is a good way to lose friends and credibility...
I think that would be challenging to do. First, there's a lot of subjectivity involved. I put stock in pricing, but pricing is variable and not everyone might agree that a price is too high. Wood is a commodity, so when a supplier gets a big shipment of a certain wood you might see prices go down. The wood quality may also vary between shipments. I assume this impacts exotics more than domestics, since exotics are harder and more expensive to obtain and in some cases have import restrictions. I feel like you could only create a meaningful list of good and bad suppliers if they had a long track record or good or bad behavior that was largely unrelated to the product. Cooks would be a bad one due to their deceptive editing of photos. Perhaps ocooch could be good because they are very very consistent on pricing. Their regular prices on lumber don't change much at all.
There is that. Maybe just a list without ratings would be better. I am sure sellers won’t mind a reference to their sites seeing as they want to sell stock.
My experience is 20 sellers domestic and exotic. At least 20 different prices.

In biz I always had my philosophy. Folks would ask who I would recommend and bring up names. I would say I will recommend my good competition but will say nothing about the bad ones. No ratings means a free for all.
If there was a way to aggregate all the good business moves, that might be a way to sort of rank them so to speak. Like for example, i ordered 10bf 8/4 hard maple about 9mo ago. I pulled one board out to find a gigantic knot in the middle that went full depth. I was pissed until i measured and counted the rest of it and discovered that they threw that board in as an extra and that the rest of the maple was clear. That kind of thing goes a long way.
