I caved and bought a headboard and footboard from Cuba of curly 'Haitian oak' also known by many other names. Catalpa longissima is the botanical. I made up a few samples for myself and a few friends in the IWCS. Paul has a third cut off he plans on photographing. Attached are a few 3/4ths" pen blanks pics, first one pollied, second one waxed and the third one natural and. The catch is I paid $42 per board foot after shipping. The wood has been verified by the importer and the USDA Forest Products Lab. A copy of the paper from FPL can be provided.

I have one piece 7" x 25", but just 6 x 20" clean and a piece 15" x 25", but 12 x 20 clean. It has some tack damage around the edge from upholstery as well as some end doweling, thus the mention of clean wood. The wood is 13/16 thick with shellac finish. Could not get a good picture without glare for the bigger pieces, but can try again in daylight.

I would like to offer some to those I owe, and trade the rest for similar costing samples I lack. Horribly opened as of now, but I am hoping to see an offer or two of something I lack in my collection. Try me, if it flops I will ask Kevin to pull the post, or if any of the moderators see fit to do so before my action.

My collection samples finish at 3 inches wide by 6 inches long by 1/2 inch thick. Botanical identification is very important.

Thanks, M. R. Peet... 011.webp 013.webp 010.webp

I don't understand your concern. You're asking for a wood trade, in the Wood for Trade forum right? What's not to like? We need more bartering like this, it's why the forum was born. Wish I had something you needed but I doubt I do.

Not sure what you have or what you're liking for but the funkiest stuff I've got is some butternut reclaimed from houses built in the late 1800's and some crazy figured birds eye maple. Everything else I have is probably stuff you have.

Can you make a list of wood samples you need? That would help us....

Ripjack just created years of work, a list. How can I? Not very easy. I have about 650 species of wood in my collection. There are 10,000 used commercially world wide, and up to 50,000 or more in obscurity. PM me and let me know how I could list a copy of my collection for everyone to see. It is likely far easier for them to know what they have and see if I have, than for me to list endlessly. Riverturnings has a deposit from me for over a dozen burled samples, so I hope he has time to let me know what they are to limit duplications.... oh yep Colin, I do have Butternut, but not in burl or curly...

I'll keep my eyes open for any curly butternut as I work through what I have left with you in mind. I've only had a couple pieces that were curly as I've stripped and sanded (this stuff had all been pained at one point)

Aha....gotcha. I thought it would be smaller....

Well Mr. Peet, I offered you a sample of the rooster-Spur Hawthorn (Crataegus crus-galli L.) I cut but you refused it. You said you didn't want it unless I was an expert at tree I.D. So, everyone else you're asking to send wood is an expert but not me? Paul was happy to receive the Hawthorn samples I sent him and he posted them on his website. Good luck gathering samples. You won't be receiving any from me. Gary

Sorry if I offended you Gary, but you need to re-read that conversation. You asked and I informed you that I already had a sample of rooster-spur hawthorn. I went on to detail that it is really important to me to have the botanical name with each sample. If you are unsure, or it is a grouped name like red & white oak, I'm declining. Likewise, even the experts have real issue with the hawthorn groups, thus a reason that so many species of them are not represented in the USDA Forest Products Lab and at Kew. I am not calling anyone an expert or inadequate.

Accuracy is very important since my materials are often used for reference materials, like Paul's site. I simply do not want to mislead anyone. There are hundreds of species of woody trees and shrubs in just North America that I lack. Many members here on woodbarter are far better at knowing their backyard than I, and I have to trust them for their identification. I also keep track via a line of custody, so that if a material is found to be incorrect or questionable, it can be back tracked to the origin.

So, once again, sorry to have offended you Gary. Have a good week.

Yes John,

I do need some Lophira alata, it is not in my collection. In fact, I do not have any samples from that genus. What did you have in mind?

@pinky

Would you want a piece big enough to share with a few of your collector friends? I might have some other samples of stuff you need as well. As far as the Haitian oak, I would want a big enough piece to make a box. I'll check tomorrow for other wood and send you a pm. I'll also post a pic of the bongossi. Never know if I'm clueless but I'm pretty confident on this one.:ok:

Let me know how big a piece you need for the box. That will determine if I need a piece big enough to share. The Haitian oak is 3/4" inch heavy (thick). What are you thinking for size(s)?

@Mr. Peet

Could you use a sample of milo, Thespesia populnea. I have other Hawaiian woods as well. I could go through those to see what I have this afternoon.

The bongossi I have is 12/4 x 5 3/4. I would cut it at 6 1/4 for your sample. It is 1/4 sawn. Lots left to share on your end.

I really would like the 15 x 25 board, not cut. Wouldn't mind seeing a picture.

I would add a few other samples to the bongossi once we determine what you could use.

Would 2 7/8" work for width?

If so, I have ohia, metrosideros collina
and have franquette walnut, not sure if that is a different species

In 3" wide
culrata rosewood, dalbergia culrata
rambutan, nephelium lappaceum

Do you have a rip to make the 'ohia' wide enough? Doesn't matter too much. John, I lack all three of those species, plus those before. Let me try getting a few pictures come daylight of the 'Haitian oak' for you. It is shellacked with a walnut stained stripe. To clean it up well, I assume a drop from 13/16ths to 11/16ths would do it. Good night.
