I caved and bought a headboard and footboard from Cuba of curly 'Haitian oak' also known by many other names. Catalpa longissima is the botanical. I made up a few samples for myself and a few friends in the IWCS. Paul has a third cut off he plans on photographing. Attached are a few 3/4ths" pen blanks pics, first one pollied, second one waxed and the third one natural and. The catch is I paid $42 per board foot after shipping. The wood has been verified by the importer and the USDA Forest Products Lab. A copy of the paper from FPL can be provided.
I have one piece 7" x 25", but just 6 x 20" clean and a piece 15" x 25", but 12 x 20 clean. It has some tack damage around the edge from upholstery as well as some end doweling, thus the mention of clean wood. The wood is 13/16 thick with shellac finish. Could not get a good picture without glare for the bigger pieces, but can try again in daylight.
I would like to offer some to those I owe, and trade the rest for similar costing samples I lack. Horribly opened as of now, but I am hoping to see an offer or two of something I lack in my collection. Try me, if it flops I will ask Kevin to pull the post, or if any of the moderators see fit to do so before my action.
My collection samples finish at 3 inches wide by 6 inches long by 1/2 inch thick. Botanical identification is very important.
Thanks, M. R. Peet...
