Went up to the Frontrange Woodturners meeting in Denver with a couple fellow members from our Pikes Peak chapter. Heard how large this chapter is and it was fun to see a large chapter in action.

The demonstration really captivated me! It was done by Josh Buettner and is focusing on wonky branch turning right now. Really incredible work. He is a big fan of Stuart Batty tools and I got a big lesson on those.

I was also shocked at the door-prize/wood swap table. One of the guys that I came up with and I really scored. Pics later.

One of the guys I went up with does almost exclusively segmented bowls. I have a lot of trading material now. I also like doing the small cheese cutting boards which a lot of these pieces will work great.

Friends invited us over for a crawfish boil. Nice being with friends if you can’t be with family.

Turns out our mountain lakes are full of them. Know what fly pattern I am using next time I am shore fishing!!

I didn't know you had Crawfish in Colorado. Growing up in Louisiana, we had Crawfish any time we wanted. Here in Arizona, they can be caught starting about April, and goes until October, or until the stream goes dry. I usually get a 5 gallon bucket full in about 2 hours. Yummy! .......... Nubs

Jerry, I was completely shocked. This friend invited me several years ago so I quizzed him about it. And this is in our mountain lakes, they aren’t driving down in elevation. I was walking the shore of the lake they were the night of the 3rd this past spring when there were still chunks of ice on shore and I was finding pieces of claws that were about an inch or so across.

That big bucket was the result of about 3-4 hours of work.

@Gdurfey, what is his technique on catching; what kind of bait, how many lines, what kind of line/lines, and where does he store them while still fishing for them. If there are any streams flowing out of the lake, that might be a good area to catch them. .............. Nubs

As long as the lakes water doesn't freeze solid (all the way to the bottom) it can hold crawfish. When it comes to fly patterns think (1) it has to be on the bottom, so heavy eyes and a good sink rate so you aren't waiting forever for your fly to get down (ie, flies without a ton of material and stuff like deer hair); (2) because it's on the bottom, ride hook up to minimize snagging rocks and limbs, etc.; and (3) movement, crawfish are constantly moving legs and antennae.

Not exactly sure on details, but beef spleen for bait and some type of hoop net sitting on bottom. They get x number in (not sure it is shallow enough to see with a light) and lift the net. They store them in a cooler with enough lake water to keep them cool and alive.

As they were only 20 minutes away from me fishing and crawdadding, I pretended to be mad they didn’t invite me.

I have a fly tying kit from Bob Clouser that I tied many years ago when I lived back in VA and wanting to fish for smallmouth. Need to go back and check that pattern and put it in my lake box. There were 2 colors; a greenish and a brown with orange belly to represent eggs. The guys that caught them said they saw very few this year that had eggs.

Garry @Gdurfey thanks for posting this and brings back memories when I lived in Charleston of having “Low Country Boil”. It had shrimps, sausage, corn and potatoes seasoned in broth. Sometimes crawfish which my in-laws had at the perimeter of their property alongside the Ashley River.
