My boxes

So here is the first flame ash box revamped.
I ditched the wooden hinges and re- shaped the front. I added small small brass hinges
The dimensions are 5 1/2”x5 3/4”x 2 1/8” tall.
Finish is Watco oil and buffed out with clear wax.
Note that the lid is the one that turned pink was used here.View attachment 294322

Lots of things right with this box. I do have one observation, and that is the joints on the front of the box seem like there is not much there to attach to. Is there something internal not shown? Chuck

It looks very good. Better than before. I showed it to my wife and she asked if we could buy it. With my ego being cracked, I immediately said:” honey, I can do that too.” Now I have to make a box and I’m not so sure I’ll do that good of a job.

I got lost earlier (possibly while at work) looking at the beautiful boxes on this thread! And since I'm here...

Here are few I made recently. The top two are seedboxes for my sisters, both avid gardeners. One is maple/walnut and the other is cherry.

The third box is a burly white oak treasure chest I made for my 10yo nephew. I left the dovetails proud and beveled the edges.

I finish everything with Odie's products- typically the wood butter and/or oil.

Is that a local maple or a west coast purchase?

Well, it sanded and worked like hard maple. I actually got it at Hearne during their open house last year. They had a discount pile of figured maple shorts and off cuts. This was a small 6/4 piece buried in the stack. Astonishing figure and wild color streaks.

So, there was a small odd shaped piece left over and it was in my scrap pile. My wife stole it from my shop and apparently squirreled it away in our bedroom closet. Yes, we both have a problem.:sarcastic:

Wow. That is quite the compliment. I am sure you could make it.
Gecko, My sincerest apologies- I just realized I hijacked your personal box making thread! I meant to post this in the general thread.

I really like the organic shapes in your boxes. Also, the wooden hinges are pretty cool! Beautiful work.

Very lucky that your wife has a wood problem too. The rest of us fear the “Holz-Verbot” (wood-ban)

No worries. I love that treasure chest. I like wooden hinges. They are really fragile though. I am lucky if I get one pair out of 5 or 6 tries.
