Projects I don't post (normally)

Made two Christmas tree projects that went straight into the burn barrel!

Managed to do some more finial practice. Piece of sea grape with maple. Globe is not hollow as it's only 1 x 2.
The finial wood is smooth. Couldn't get the black paint to lay right. Think it's to cold in the shop.
Will make a few more before changing to African black wood.

You are quickly becoming Mr Finial! So nice! Good to get techniques down before shifting to expensive exotics. Chuck

I need a bigger mantle! Running out of room for all the stuff I've made. Glad I'm starting to give some away as gifts. Need the room!
Everything here including the mantle was made by me, except the porcelain sock holders.

I was gifted a whole apple tree from a couple I have befriended. I decided to make them an ornament out of their own tree and surprise them.
I laser engraved it saying made from wood from their address. They got it in the mail and sent me a pic yesterday of it on their tree.

Up way to early this morning!
Quick African blackwood box. Had a few defects in it but decided to turn it anyway. Sure is hard stuff! Needed to sharpen the gouge numerous times. 1 round by 2 high. Friction polish finish.
Wife already grabbed it!

Looks good. Is that a chip on the cover? You could carve several of them into the cover and call it a crown. Poor mans way of hiding stuff.

Yes. It was in there before I started turning. Knot hole or something. Good Idea.

Wife says I failed!
Wanted the holes to look like a snowman. Should have used 3 size drills!
Put a nickel down to try and show how small the finials actually are.
Last project till after Christmas I think. Lot's of places to go starting Tm.

I like it Phil. My first thought was a snowman, but then my opinion doesn't count, especially if it counters your wife's!. The finials are well done.

Since you are exploring ornament types and finials, have you tried an inside out turning? You can get a similar appearance with a hollowed out interior and "windows" to the inside where you can put finials or other shapes.

Got me wondering why a snowman would have a finial running up & down his body! Think the snowman idea needs further thought. Chuck

Have tried an inside out ornament in the past. A few were successful! Lol. I need a jointer to get everything flat and square. I originally made one for this project and the wife poo pooed it because the joints were to rough.
I have some ideas working in my head for the next edition of this.
