Quick practice piece out of walnut. About 5 inches long. I need a smaller bead cutting tool.
You could try to make your own. An old HSS drill bit can be reshaped into small detail tools. I used to have a kolrosing knife made from an old drill bit until I got a nicer handmade one.
Just make a handle and glue the sharp end of the bit into the handle with some epoxy and then sharpen the blunt end (the one you would usually put in the chuck)
It makes for a surprisingly good tool. The only reason I changed was that I got a discount while buying my sloyd knives.
Hollow that bad boy out and puts some beans inside and you’ve got a high end baby rattle.

First try at a carved hollow ornament. Some type of hard wood for the globe. Black wood for the finials.

Those finials are great though.
This finials are very very good. Skew work? The globe requires some rethinking but I think it has potential.

1/2 inch and 1/4 inch spindle gouges used.
Phil, I like your design/concept, and there is a lot to like going forward. You've got the knack for nice looking, balanced finials, and you'll get there with the carving. Like everything, just takes some time refining methods. I can't really offer much carving advice, but others will if you share your steps and tools you are using.

My first thought was that everything looked okay. Finials are masterful, albeit hefty proportionately to the globe. The globe itself has a great deal of potential, and I just can’t place how I would improve. I keep looking at it, and just realized the globe has a mating joint on the bottom, but not the top. Could be camera angle, or I’m just missing it for some reason. And are those supposed to be burn lines within the globe on the top and bottom? Looks a bit amateurish, and not crisp and clean. The concept is dead on, so worth refining. Chuck

Burn lines were added afterthought to try and clean up carved edges. Yes their is a bead on the bottom and not the top. The bead was holding the globe in the chuck. Decided not to turn it off as this was all an experiment. Trying to hollow these small thin pieces with just the 5/8th hole results in lots of explosions. Thanks!

Did you power carve that? It looks like it just needs so cleanup. I would recommend a small diameter sanding wheel for most of that. Would clean up the burrs and allow a slow clean up/ straightening of the vertical.

Yes. I drilled it and then used a burr ro grind the slots. I wanted more of a curve on the slots.

Like others have said, I really like the concept. You stepped out there and tried it. I don’t think you are that far off. You are an incredible turner, the carving is coming along!

Had the piece on the left sitting on the floor from the last project.
Decided to make something out of it for practice. 4 round by 4 1/2 high. 3/4 inch hole. Friction polish finish. The inside is pretty rough. Might rechuck and turn some more.
