To play the devil's advocate here a bit, the Cotinus I'm working to buy from the guy in Oregon is 24" wide at the widest point of the biggest slab. Though that appears to be at the crotch. Main trunk looks like it's at least 14". He provided this photo of the tree it came from (it was a downed branch/trunk, so tree is still living). He also sent a couple videos but they're more annoying to post here.

Hey @Mr. Peet I appreciate your expertise and really want to get the identification of this wood correct. What do you think of the end grain close-ups I posted in comment #32. And my logic. Are they helpful?

If you look at post #32, it has clearly visible rays and pores in dendritic and diagnal patterns. These patterns do not match most of that seen on Paul's site for Cotinus. The pores are more commonly stacked over pith (not on angles). The colors are also off.

I recall seeing the post but did not look at it, if you follow my lack of attention. I'll take another look.

Hi @Mr. Peet Thanks for taking another look. We'll move our conversation back to that thread. I have a cutoff from the same piece that has been planed so I'll post photos of it. This will hopefully give better color than the rough cut portion.

No I know. I was just showing that Cotinus can get pretty large. Steve's may still be something completely different, but it seems that the trunk diameter isn't necessarily a red flag with his wood given the size of mine.

Thanks, Dave. The Salmon gum is a species Ive not found for sale anywhere, so I'll look into buying some from that link (link isn't working on my work computer, but it might be blocked).

I actually have another connection for Gum arabic, but its from Australia. So duties and shipping get pricey. I am trying to see if I can get some of these imports a little cheaper from someone here in the states before looking at international orders. Some are trade restricted as well. That said, given our ongoing trade agreement, we might be able to work our something if you have any species I cant easily get here.

@Big Ry looking at that like I’m fairly sure that is not salmon gum. Maybe York gum or ribbed fruit mallee. If I remember in a bit I’ll share pictures. I have one larger Burl slab of salmon gum I’ve been debating parting with for a while. I can’t bring myself to cut it up.

I'm actually primarily looking for the non-burl wood for those species that are more often than not sold as burl. I would take burl wood if its all I can get though.

Ok, I’ll keep my eye out. Salmon gum is a vibrant pinkish red when wetted. Not the color in that link

I have a little mun left. Minimum size?

Here is backside of persimmon. Marks are at 2' just want both to see cracks. No I won't go through pile to look for crack free. I have had over 1000 board ft. All cracked and warped at center. Let me know if that changes you wanting it.

Hey Mike, thank you for showing the backside photo. I’d still like one 2’ long piece if it’s cut from one of the ends of the board, but 20 inches long is enough if cut from the center of the board. Thanks for checking.
