What did you do in your shop today?

Around 42F outside today, but sunny and little wind. So I rolled the mobile work bench out into the driveway and cut out two fly boxes from that canary wood I got from John (@TTP GC ) a while ago. Routing out the inside makes a lot of saw dust for a couple little pieces of wood. But now I can finish the rest inside where I can turn on the heater.

Working on walnut crotch. Piece was really too thin to have the figure on the bottom of the bowl, so I reversed the piece and kept the figure on the top and made a hollow form.

Don't know how many I'll make this large and this shape. Trying to get a tool to reach the widest point was a challenge. Difficulty was compounded by it clogging with shavings every 30 seconds.

Normally, would hollow fe the top down, working towards the bottom. To get at this one had to finish the bottom to get an angle at which I could cut the wide part. An extra half inch wider on the mouth would have helped, but it was too late for that.

Okay, amazing how you can turn these around, use your live center and be so out of balance. That’s okay, I like it. Can’t believe…..great day in the lathe. Not sure I have ever ridden the bevel that well……on my 80 grit gouge!!!!!

Aspen with BLO and I will use spray lacquer when it gets warm. Denise is heading out of town so will head to Hobby lobby and do a small dry arrangement for it for when she returns. I need brownie points…..

Also was working on the bench/outfeed bench. Can’t believe how warped a couple these pieces of plywood were. Will have to get some help to flip it over and finish it up.

In the meantime I can get the castors on once I go get some hardware.

"Okay, amazing how you can turn these around, use your live center and be so out of balance."

Garry, Check your tailstock to your power head. Balance shift should be minimal unless your head and tail are out of alignment for parallel side to side and height.

One way to check is use a spur tapor on both tail and head stock. Turn a similar vase shape. Reverse both spurs when you end for end the piece so that each spur is in the same end of the wood it started in. If it is out of balance, check your alignment. Sometimes its just the density of the wood be shifted in the opposite direction.

When I moved my lathe and got it setup again I noticed the tailstock was a little out of alignment. Need to check again now that it has been sitting and used again a bit.

Sausage and fly boxes. Nice balance of activity. Two canary wood (from John @TTP GC ) boxes ready to go to the engraver guy.

South African boerwurst and breakfast sausages. Aging for a couple days in the chilly garage.

Cleaning up a bit. This was when I first started it at 4:48. It's now 8:13 and I'm still 🔥 stuff. Getting tired of the clutter so a lot of it is going up in smoke. Still have a few hours of 🔥 to go and I'll be close to where I wanna be.
