What did you do in your shop today?

Worked on a couple of blanks for basket illusion pieces. No design in mind, just wanted some ready to go when I get an idea.

Black locust.

Put last coat of poly on maple mounting board, 2 coats of clear coat on saw blade, and got handles assembled. Need to drill pilot holes to mount blade, then take it to camp to hang.
Almost there!

I'm going to have to find some of that wood, never used it. looks amazing
I enjoy turning it, which is good, as it's the most plentiful species I have here. Hard, and a medium texture, it holds details well. Sands and finishes easily.

If you don't find some near you, I'll have to set some aside when I drop the next tree.

I‘ve turned handles for kitchen tools out of Black Locust, and liked its properties, as well. Think it would be great to have some lumber to make large thing from. Chuck

Three down, three to go. But I need to get the motor repaired on my belt/disc sander before I do any more. Desert ironwood is HARD.

And a health hazard if you breath too much of it. We all know that, but never hurt to keep repeating it. I probably have over 1000 pounds of it, and I've probably only turned maybe 3-4 pieces at maybe a 2 pound rough blank on each. I like it, but don't like the smell and risk.

Knives are looking pretty good. ................ Jerry (in Tucson)

I didn't know about the health hazard - more than other sawdust? It does smell bad when I'm sanding it.

The Seri Indians in Mexico who did and still does all those Ironwood Carvings that were the rage about 30 years ago pretty much all have lung issues if they're still alive. The were also cooking with it and using the scraps for heat in their homes. Primitive but with all the research done on them, it's been determined that Ironwood is their nemesis. I'm trying to sound intelligent using nemesis. Two dollar words always come back to haunt me. ............. Jerry (in Tucson)

All finished!
Wife went along to camp and helped me hang it.

Not the best pic but sun was coming in the 2 windows.

I designed a special fly today. Nice to use my fly tying corner of the shop for a few minutes. Now to see if it will work on cat fish…….more to come……be patient……

Nice. We call that a floor sweeper (because you tie in whatever you find on the floor). Dip that fly in some chicken blood and the cats will swarm it.
