What did you do in your shop today?

From off the shelf, mesquite that started as something else but came apart. Been on the shelf so long I don’t recall the original intent. Now it’s just a “vessel”. I think it needs a lid, but no more mesquite. Maybe some curly maple with a Blackwood handle?

Mushroom

I didn't measure it but I think it is close to 10 inches tall. I CA'd the bark in hopes it doesn't fall off. I'm really not sure of the species? This thing is wetter than wet. I've kept in on the chuck and brought it into the house to let is dry out. I'll return it to the lathe and sand it down in a few days.

So nice to see you back on the lathe! Think you best make a few of these mushrooms! Chuck

Okay... found out. The previous bowl blanks I did were Wild Cherry... this mushroom is Black Cherry.
Jon, they may be the same, depending on who named the wood you have. Black cherry is Prunus serotina, around here all of our "wild cherry" is black cherry.

I looked it up and compared the pictures of the bark and the size of the tree. The Wild Cherry gets around 60 feet. The black cherry is much smaller... so these seem to fit.

Are you referring to black cherry as in the black form fruit from either Sour cherry (P. cerasus) or Sweet cherry (P. avium) ?

Oh... I did not go that deep. Where we live, the two different sizes of tree (both well grown) and the bark determined it for me.

I worked on a couple of my routers and assessed what was still good and what would be replaced. A bosch router and plunge base was severely coroded from the flood when I first moved in here. I was able to save the router but the base is too far gone. So I'll order a new bosch kit soon.
Then I worked on a box for a friend. Finger joints where way to tight so I loosened them up, turns out it was too much. I'll be making some wood filler with sanding dust and glue rather than starting all over again. This box is for a post office box door and the door fits perfectly. So I'll cary on.

Sorry, no before or after pics, but I spent an hour cleaning off my lathe bench... That actually sounds better than it was...

What I actually did was power up the air compressor and blow everything off the bench to the floor. Now the floor is about six inches higher than it was, but the pitch fork is sitting there ready, so next time I'll start digging a years worth of shavings out for my annual cleanup. Working on the lathe when the spindle is waist high is just too much. :lol2:
