What did you do in your shop today?

Finally finished the hollow form I discussed in Post #12001 above.

Began with this cracked, first turned maple form.

Filled the cracks, on all four quadrants, with epoxy and painted it black.

Finished with Jo Sonja iridescent paints.

Cool transformation! I might have called that hopeless, wouldn't have thought to rescue it that way. Filing that away for future reference.

Started a new project. Looks like a box but it isn't a box. Well, sort of a box but not. So far cholla thins from Jerry ( @Nubsnstubs ) and curly cherry I think I got from Mike ( @pvwoodcrafts ). Won't say any more in case I totally screw it up and it ends up in the dumpster.

Haven't played with the “Big Boy“ tools in awhile, it’s work! Started with a smaller one and got it roughed out, will refine the shape and continue next time. Goal is to get these turned before our tourist season kicks off around Memorial Day.

It always impresses me to see how you guys do that.

I worked a little on my new project before my guitar coach showed up. Got the "posts" made. Decided to slice up that piece of mogno rosado (from Brazil that I had in the for sale section). It is quite a bit like mahogany but when I start routing and sanding on it, it is definitely different, much more orange and finer grain. But it seems to go with the cherry around the panels. I routed V grooves into the sides of the posts and the panels will nest into those grooves - essentially giving me panels with a squared off corner. I also made little "stands" that hold the panels in place so I can dry fit and test the posts etc.

Love the Cholla. A little bit of @Nubsnstubs in there, and thankfully not literally…
I don’t think.

I was cleaning up my shop a bit today and just putting tools away. I ran my hand across the top of the table saw and it felt rough. It was starting to develop some surface rust, I couldn't see it but I could definitely feel it.
So I hand sanded it with a sanding block and 320 grit.

Then I waxed it, a section at a time.

All buffed up and ready to go again and its got some protection again. Basement shops can be damp at times.

I sure notice the difference when I put a wax coat on my table saw. The fence slides smooth, wood doesn't grab and stick, I need to wax the fence too and also my router table top.

Then I worked on my boat swim platform. It's in really bad shape. The goal is to just freshen up the top side and give it a face-lift for this season. Hopefully I'll make a new one this winter.
God only knows how many coats of varnish are on this.

Its in really bad shape, very rough, grain is worn away and theres cracks on the end grain.

I broke out the big bosch and set it to turbo with 80 grit paper. I see fresh teak!

It took about 2 hours to get to this point. I still have to do the sides with the 80 grit. I'll probably only go to about 150 grit. But it's already looking better.⁸

That's it for today, back is toast. Ibuprofen and rest for tonight, lol. Getting old sucks!
