What did you do in your shop today?

Then I worked on my boat swim platform. It's in really bad shape. The goal is to just freshen up the top side and give it a face-lift for this season. Hopefully I'll make a new one this winter.
God only knows how many coats of varnish are on this.

Its in really bad shape, very rough, grain is worn away and theres cracks on the end grain.

I broke out the big bosch and set it to turbo with 80 grit paper. I see fresh teak!

It took about 2 hours to get to this point. I still have to do the sides with the 80 grit. I'll probably only go to about 150 grit. But it's already looking better.⁸

That's it for today, back is toast. Ibuprofen and rest for tonight, lol. Getting old sucks!
Surprising how much time it takes to sand off old finishes and get to bare wood. Looking good! Chuck

I was cleaning up my shop a bit today and just putting tools away. I ran my hand across the top of the table saw and it felt rough. It was starting to develop some surface rust, I couldn't see it but I could definitely feel it.
So I hand sanded it with a sanding block and 320 grit.

Then I waxed it, a section at a time.

All buffed up and ready to go again and its got some protection again. Basement shops can be damp at times.

You sir, have a very fancy table saw.

Remember to buy extra varnish, that thing is going to suck it up! Looks great though for its age.

And no, getting old doesn’t suck……you know better.

Work continues on the swim platform. 1st coat soaked in and dried nice. It's not as glossy now.

I rubbed it down with an extra fine synthetic pad. I really like this look. Ill be doing it after every coat and after the last coat. I like the softer non glossy natural look.

2nd coat applied........

Gluing irregularly shaped stuff together is a challenge. It takes clamps, clamps clamped in a vise, tape, glue, rubber bands, strap clamps and pixie dust. And in my case luck, But looks like it's going to work so far.
vise clamps tape glue and pixie dust.webp

rubber bands abd strap clamp dry fit.webp

Scuffed with synthetic pad and a heavy coat brushed on. It's starting to flow out nice. 1 or 2 more coats I think. Last coat I'll sand with 320 and then rub out with the synthetic pad to give the satin look.
Wet....

Don’t feel ashamed. I’m sure it was meant more jokingly and out of interest. In my experience nubs is a nice guy. Very direct but nice and honest.
Don't listen to that Austrian/NZer. He's OK, but he'd better be glad that I missed being a Texan by a few months.

A burl is going to have cracks, bark inclusions, and voids. That's what you get from working that type of wood. You just have to know how to enhance them or place them to where your piece really shines. .................. Nubs

Just after I said nice things.

You’re just OK too. I forgot you were Texan.

A guy from Texas told me his family was one of the first to settle there. I said "a Tejano then". He got Yosemite Sam mad lol. I have known a lot of Texans though, and they're mostly good folks.

We like to joke around here. Texans are often the Center of such jokes. Especially from me (-;

Sorry Dani ole boy, I'm not a Texan. I'm a proud Cajun. But, my Mom and her bros and sis's were all Texans. BTW, my grandfather was from near Roswell. Does that explain anything? ................ Nubs
