What did you do in your shop today?

Those are all great, Barry! But, I gotta say that, for some reason, that little one in front, the smallest one, right of center, really speaks to me with both that live edge and the contrast of heartwood and sapwood.
Thanks Matt, that one is mesquite burl with sapwood, wish I could get my hands on more of that!

Buffing day, had quite a few in the queue that I have turned over the last couple of months, so I devoted today to rubbing them out and buffing, and it took most of the day! Most are gnarly pieces as you can see, kinda my shtick now as most buyers want the "character" stuff IME. Mostly olive, some mesquite and random other woods... range from 4 to 15 inches tall

Incredible. Looks like you are doing just fine!!

Barry all great pieces. Do you do anything to prevent pieces from flying apart like using plastic wrap or strapping tape? Also mind sharing what finish you put on these?

i'm pretty sure that's beeswing eucalyptus wood

You really knocked it out of the park with these turnings! They are exemplary in all respects, some being museum quality! I would be interested to hear the story on that segmented one. Chuck

Thanks Carl, I do sometimes bind them with duct tape if they look sketchy. My finish for all of these is a shellac sealer coat, then lacquer...

Trev, If your talking about the 2 little bowls, they are Carob. These have a more than normal amount of sapwood, and it is usually creamy white, but these were from a long dead chunk so the sapwood has turned gray. Im guessing you have came across it in Vegas, sure is a lot of it around here...

Sooo.....what did you do after breakfast?
😁
Beautiful pieces, for the designs and shapes, but especially for the wood colors and patterns!!!
Always interesting to see the different woods available in other parts of the country.

In and out of the shop work. Cut up all the ash wane and put it in the burn box.

Quick outside chopsaw setup.

Then I did the same thing on the shop scrap box, filled it.

And I was able to pull a bunch of usable wood out of the scrap box. Now I just gotta find a place to put it. Walnut and some walnut sapwood. Which is also pretty hard. 20231202_191521.webp
Found some crotches.

And some I saved when processing the boards.

Glad I got all this done. Now I need a dry weekend to burn the cut up scraps.

Today I finally completed all the work I needed to do on the vehicles. So after getting my vehicle out of the garage, it was time to start putting the shop back in order. I started moving stuff back and made some decent progress. As I move some of the shorter boards back onto the shelves, I'm sorting - burn pile, put back on the shelf, or make cutting boards with. I'm going to make a handful of cutting boards once the shop is back together to use up some of the shorter boards that I have just accumulated too many of.

I have thought about doing the same thing when my bench is done just to clean up the wood stash and the shop a bit.

I've told myself for some time that I'll use them for making boxes - which I haven't gotten around to, but still want to do. But the reality is that I could make a whole lot of boxes with all the shorter boards I've accumulated.

Now, certainly not everything is suitable for making cutting boards with. But what is, I will use up.

I have a handful of wider, but thinner, boards that I plan to make some charcuterie boards out of as well.
