What did you do in your shop today?

What I did in my shop today: Dry Bowls, already to turn! Walnut, Siberian Elm, and some Maple. That really big Walnut in the back of the rest... I'm thinking of just hanging on to it so I can make my own urn. Claro Walnut, what better way to leave this mortal vessel?

Such a nice tailgate of bowl blanks! Which one(s) are Siberian Elm? Chuck

Everyone warned me, and I didn't listen. They said if Karen starts turning, you'll need two lathes or you won't get time on it. Well, it happened today.
😄
And I don't mind. All those bowl blanks are just sitting there... never made it to the lathe.

I have 2 lathes, my Betty would be welcome if she had an interest.

My Bette got in the shop during covid and I taught her how to run my cnc mill. I enjoyed the company and she told me she
was enjoying the experience as well, until I told her one morning that we had to have a safety meeting. LOL
Truth is, we changed product design and went to a laser as well, and now I have to teach laser 101. When the peak of the pandemic hit, we
got stuck with over 2000 items in the Amazon warehouse in Joliet Ill. and they charge you for storage until the product starts moving again.

Turned the lathe on for the firme in several months. No real plan other than to try out a new chuck that I just picked up. It worked great. I'll form the tenons a bit better before turning it around. Had enough fun for one night!

The wood is a piece of spalted Hackberry that I cut up last fall. Lost some thickness getting a large crack out. My first piece of it to turn. It turned well and sands to a smooth surface easily.

A good night!

Congrats on getting back in the groove! The Hackberry bowl will be stunning when you get it all finished! Chuck

Vicmarc 120 chuck?

I'm either old and don't remember, or I just did not know you had a Nova!

AND - that bowl is gonna look stunning when it is finished!

I've had the Nova for a few years now and it has worked very well for me. I like it.

You may have one as well? Have you been pleased with the overall product?

Yes, I do. Am pleased for what I put it through. Have even turned pens and some fragile skinny finials on it. Gone outboard with a couple of bigger platters - and it did well. Only complaint is that the clamp that holds the tailstock in place along the rails does not hold as well as it should and have had to put a piece of sandpaper between the tailstock and the rail to get more holding power. Wish, I had upgraded to variable speed before they did away with the upgrade. And I really should have some more weight in/on the stand. Would I want a Oneway or an American Beauty? Indubitably, but don't have the room nor want to spend the $$$$$$.

The Nova seems very versatile for your needs.

The variable speeds and ability to swivel the headstock for easy access to the bowl / platter interior have been very nice feature features that I have learned to appreciate.

I would love to have a high-end lathe. Perhaps one day I will use the lathe enough to justify the cost.:haggle:

Cleaned up and put my lathe back together, took some photos and posted it for sale on Craigslist. Had a call right away but it was a guy who thought I meant Redmond, WA instead of Redmond, OR. He decided it was too far to drive. But got an email from a lady just up the road in Crooked River who is interested. So hopefully this thing will get sold quickly and out of my garage.

UPDATE: Woo hoo, sold and gone. A retired guy worked for the Fed gov't in their machine shops bought it. He ought to be able to make it hum in no time. He was happy, I'm happy, so win win.

Then I added a vise to my mobile work bench. I mentioned a neighbor up the road passed away a couple months ago and he had a pretty extensive shop. I've been trying to help his wife get rid of what she can so she can use the space. He had this long work bench with a vise attached on one end, with bench dogs all along the length. He must have clamped it to his regular bench when he needed to secure a board or something. Anyway, I ended up with it and have been fiddling with ideas how to best use it. Instead of making the Moxon vise for my inside bench, I decided to mount this to my mobile bench. I had to route some grooves on the bottom of the bench top to allow access for the vise guide rods and threaded rod. Then I just drilled and screwed it to the top. I think it'll really add some capability to my bench, to hold wood when I need to sand it, plane it, etc.

So it's been a good day. A hot day, but a good one.
