What did you do in your shop today?

I have been walking a mile a day to help build back my heart condition, which tires me out and I end up not wanting to go into the shop. I am hoping to get going tomorrow. But it will be roughing out a bunch of cherry bowls. So, nothing too exciting. I've got some cleaning up in the shop before work begins.
Try cutting up logs into turning blanks with a chainsaw to build back your heart condition. Win win…

So good to hear you are slowly coming back! Step by step…. Chuck

Next is a little project for one of the members at church. Hes retired from the post office, they gave him his p.o. box door. He asked me to make a box for him.
he wanted a dark wood so I selected some walnut drops.

I'm thinking finger box joints for this box. I gotta whip up a jig.

Glad you are doing this. I have a couple to do myself, so I will be able to copy what you do, if that is okay. Chuck

Of course it is, lol. I don't own an exclusive on anything I do. We all copy things and try to do what others have done that inspires us. Isn't that a part of this thing we call wood working?

Not me, I claim personal and private ownership to everything I post on here and anyone who copies my stuff owes me a bajillion dollars. I know that may sound extreme, but I figure it will only take one sucker.... honest woodworker to honor my request and I'll be set for life.

I fixed that for you to make it official- I get a percentage for every sucker that falls for this:

Not my shop but another local woodworker in Bend. My guitar coach and I went over to use his big drum sander to thin out some backs and sides for acoustic guitars. The owner had this huge burl slab standing in his shop. He had installed two bow ties to stiffen a couple cracks and saturated some punky areas with wood sealer. He said he calls it a vertical wall hanging and named it "The Portal". He said it is big leaf maple. Really eye catching piece but you'd need a wall as big as a museum to display it.

Great way to try to recapture value from your unusable cuts.

I thought he was making a big table for a conference room or something but he told me 'no, it's a vertical art piece.' He told me he's had a few people come look at it but so far no offers. The thing is huge, I don't know what it weighs. It's sitting on a frame with casters. See the big rough hewn block at the bottom? That block is roughly 12"x12" and there's another one on the opposite side. The burl is pinched between the two blocks.

I got a new shop vac for the shop and set it up today. So I cleaned out the old one and gave it to my neighbor.
These Dewalt stealthsonic vacuums are amazing! So quiet and still have great suction.

IMHO, you can’t sell this unless you can visually display this properly and kindle folks imagination. This needs to coupled with a forged iron with a channel for this to slip into with a heavy duty oval base plate with tiny ball feet at 5 points; yes you will need a rod at the one end to keep it steady. This would sell here easily in NYC- Instagramer’s would be on this like “sweet on honey”. The opening will allow a kid and an adult to have their photo taken with the proper back drop.

I do get a pay cut for the idea and you do have my address? Well will split how about that?

I was going to give you half, but since you turned the photo upside down totally disrupting the marketing effort, potentially exposing us to conspiracy theories of AI and fake news, you get diddly. So sorry.

I was too busy stuffing myself with food and I had my handful with a thigh on one hand (that doesn’t sound right) and another drumstick on the other hand, pumpkin pie on my lap, cranberry at my elbows, gravy in both cheeks (hey, I am a messy eater)- :pleasantry:didn’t have time to photoshop airbrush the background:pleasantry:
Oh I am getting something alright :gobble:……put it there:itsadeal:……….bottoms up:drinks::drinks:………..royalties, cha-ching, cha-ching :gotmywood::gotmywood::gotmywood:

PS- best I can do as I had only my pinky left for my disposal (fingershop and not photoshop)….now I get 1/2 :gotmywood:

Yours is bigger than mine, I'll give you that. But yours looks like concrete. In fact, it sort of resembles some of my first attempts to make my own shape charges when I was in the Army. My platoon sargeant and squad leaders and I had a running contest to see who could make a shape charge that would blow a nice clean hole through a concrete wall without blowing the wall apart.

Today was all about a upgrade to the shop tunes. Years ago someone gave me these speakers and since I recently upgraded the stereo reciever I figured it was time to get them in the shop. Problem is I have to empty half the wood rack and move everything in front of it. So a major project.

These are ESS brand, high end back in the day and still kinda valuable. 20241130_130632.jpg
Very unusual midrange/tweeter.

First one in place.
20241130_131538.jpg
Both are now in place. Most of the wood is back on the rack. Lots to stand in front of the rack yet. I need to make grills for the front of the speakers too.
20241130_150541.jpg
This is the vintage Kenwood that will drive them. No need to go past 3 on the volume, lol.

Old speakers will go to the garage.

After I cleaned up the shop I worked on making a finger joint jig for a project for a friend. 20241130_164456.webp
1/2" dado stack
20241130_164507.webp
I think I need to add a shim to the dado stack to get a better fit.

So that was a lot for today, my back is fatigued.
