What did you do in your shop today?

Actually made some curls and sawdust. One success, one not so much but nice to fire up the bandsaw and spin some wood. Our granddaughter is named Juniper so I harvested some from an hour west of here and am trying to do some rattles for her. One success with some bb’s inside, one not so successful.

Keep on trying!

In between snow plowing and other commitments over the weekend, I worked up a few samples of Amur maple from Tim and a sample of Corktree from Eric (passed in October). The upper right and upper left Amur maple samples have pippy burls. The upper center sample is 1/4 sawn with heart rot. The lower right Amur maple sample has wild figure, but only seen when turning the wood in certain light. The lower left is Lavalle corktree with great figure. Next picture is other side then two close-ups. Saturday night, cut the wrong side of the line with one sample and glued the cut-off back on. Tried again Sunday with better results.

That heart rot discolouration is wild. I wouldn't know what I would do with it but I am very tempted to infect a tree just to get that colour pattern.

Later today I'll try to find some more pictures of the Amur. It looked fantastic, but the whole tree had shake and there wasn't much usable other than a couple small forms and some samples for Mark.

Here is one form I made from that wood.

Here is the other.

I think that was all I made from the wood I got. As I mentioned earlier, shake throughout....

Edit: here is the wood fresh cut. A couple posts down from the top of this thread.

Nice 1st attempt!
I believe all parts should be bigger than 1 1/2 inches to prevent choking.
Yep, she said that. Well…..then she showed me a picture of her and yes, hands are a bit larger than I was thinking. Got it. May also have to make another once they are here.

Finished restoration of an old hand powered grinder I found at my FIL's place a bit ago . No handle and completely locked up, no tool rest. Works great now.
IMG_0926.webp Now to an old sickle-mower grinder. Crank broken.

years ago this was my go to chisel sharpener, when a major grind was in order. Never burnt an edge with it. Had a makeshift tool rest mounted to bench.

Lil Mikey used to irritate his granddad and uncle when he would just stand there and crank one of those grinders as fast as he could! Always knew I could turn it faster if I only tried.

My baby rattle attempt #2. Going okay until I set it in front of the heater f the glue. Duh, still practiced on the shape. Also, on the first small one, I used CA but was concerned about cold and age. But it is acting okay. Will use that on the third attempt.

Fill the crack with colored epoxy, call it an accent versus accident.

I thought of sawdust from the turning, but I have some black UV glue that would work. Will try it just for the heck. Try 3 in the books, I just didn’t get the picture yet.

I would use plain old wood glue to hold it together.
Wouldn't try to repair cracks. Would just make another. Wouldn't want it to break and let the contents harm the baby.

I would not use plain old wood glue, being it is water soluble and rattles end up getting mouthed by the user very often. I would use food grade and water proof glue. Using this grade glue to repair the crack, the rattle has just as much chance to break as that of a rattle without cracks. Appearance usually does not matter to the user.

Phil, you do great work and love to turn, so of course you would make another. I'd likely not.
