What did you do in your shop today?

That spalted white birch looks so cool. Is that the native Paper birch or another? Is the heartwood really that red (or more brown)?

I only have a single sample in the reference collection of an all white (sapwood) sample taken over pith. I've been looking to get a 1/4 sawn sample with heartwood and sapwood. If you score anything, I'm in, likewise for a spalted blank. Samples finish at 3" x 6" x 1/2".

We call it white birch around here, it’s our state tree. Color in the pic is true, here’s direct sunlight. The on hand blanks are cut and too small for your specs but have some in the shed that should yield a 1/4 sawn hw/sw sample. Won’t get to them til spring and posted your request on my work board.

I jointed, planed, as sorted, and ripped stock for half of the morning. I finally got enough good pieces to do the first glue up for a end grain cutting board that I am attempting to make. IMG_20260203_110909515.webp

Why are you saying you're "attempting to make". Looks to me that you are doing a lot better job than I've done, meaning that you have a dark wood on one side and a lighter wood on the opposite side. I always forget to do that, and have to go back later and add a piece. ............... Nubs

I've still got time to screw it up, 2 more glue ups. It's supposed to be a staircase pattern, I guess if I make a mess of it I can cut it up and reglue it to make a random pattern. 😂

This mesquite is from trunk that I took up to Skull Valley to get milled by friends that live there. It's been stickered on my back porch for about 3 years. I got this slab and drew the diameters where I got 4 blanks at 1 7/8" thick x 11 1/2. One had
a bunch of wavy areas that I decided I couldn't use it. The plan was not to get two from each blank, but since the wood was good, I went ahead and tenoned both sides and set a parting point in the middle thickness at 7/8 each. I'm using a D- Way parting tool that only allows for about a 4" depth, so that presented a problem. My bandsaw only allows 9" max, so I had to use a handsaw. It took more time to cut that 3-4" than it took to make 2 tenons and shape both sides.
One of the blanks had that wavy spot that wouldn't allow for 2 plates. That's why there are only 5 of them.
Now, Chuckie ole boy,(@Maverick) you need to get your eyes tested as a couple of those plates, top left and center, need a lot more work on the bottoms. That will be done today when I get to the tenons. ............. Nubs

I knew they needed to be finished and sanded. No doubt. I was just in awe of the overall quality of the wood itself. Chuck

I’ve said this a lot on this forum. My little piece of west Texas hade mesquite scrub and bushes. Never knew it as a real tree. I am always amazed and fascinated by it when I see big blanks, slabs, and fine products such as these.

This is exactly what I want to do in my next round of cutting boards. Following this thread closely! Chuck
I did the second glue up this morning, when I cut it up tomorrow for the final glue up I will know if it's going to be a hit or a mess. I've been taking pictures if it works as planned I will start a thread. If not I will probably start a fire 😂
