What did you do in your shop today?

Continuing my effort to work projects that have been on the shelf or floor for years.

Maple, cracked on all 4 quadrants, really wanted to put it in the wood stove.

Decided to fill the cracks with epoxy and try to finish it without causing an explosion.

Returned the outside.

Got out my homemade steady rest.

And hollowing rig.

To be continued……

Almost ready to glue up. With the garage around 40 degrees it take a lot longer for the finish to cure, but I'm getting there. Oil heater, overhead lights that provide heat, a desk lamp lowered down close to the box parts... the mesquite sides are looking sharp.

That’s going to be rustic exquisite! I like it!

Thanks Chuck and everyone. Got it glued up last night, the lid fits perfectly, just a tiny bit of resistance when it fully seats. Diagonals are equal at 10.25" each so at least I got it square. Next up splines. No more photos, you're going to have to wait in joyful anticipation... or something.

Just out of curiosity, when you put one of those up, do the cats automatically know to hang out on it or do you have to coax them or teach them it's their's to use?

Normally cats think of you as their pet. This means they also think of your house as their house. This means that they will sit in anything they want to sit on. They can be made to learn things but it is harder than with dogs for exactly this reason.

So yes. Most cats will just jump on it like one of us with a new tool.

Hmmm, okay, guess that's another reason I don't want a cat. First reason being my wife is really allergic to them. Had a stray wander onto my deck two days ago and unfortunately he ran off too fast for me to get a good shot at him with my sling shot.

Joke or actual? That with the slingshot? Sounded funny. Cats are also less maintenance for the same reason. You don’t need to worry if you were gone for too long or if you closed the door (doesn’t make sense with cats anyway because they always find a way out)

I have four kittens now that were born and raised in my attic by their feral mother. She's no longer with them. The cats are indoor/outdoor cats; I try to bring them in at nights. I have seen coyotes and fox in my yard. So as a refuge during the day I build a stair up into the attic. I put the males paws onto the steps and after a bit, he climbed right up. The others followed.

No joke, I'll shoot those stray and feral cats in a heartbeat. They're one of the worst threats to birdlife, especially where there are ground nesting birds like quails. People need to learn to keep their cats at home or risk them to coyotes or me.

I meant the part with the slingshot. I know coyotes feral animals are bad even though they don’t exist here.

I like using a sling shot because it's quiet, ammunition is plentiful and cheap, and I don't risk upsetting my neighbors. And truth be told - I really don't want to kill anything, just want to teach them hanging out around my house isn't a good idea. A cross bow would work (other than the deadly part) but I don't have one and I'd have to go retrieve my arrows afterward. With the pebbles I shoot with my sling shot, I just go find new ones.

They had torn the last one up so badly they were a bit hesitant….for about 6 hours. Then curiosity took over. The old one had similar features. Wife was prepared with some catnip but not needed.

Decided I wanted a fifth form for my black locust basket illusion series, so turned, beaded and hollowed another. It will be dry by the time I finish the third and fourth.

Having too much fun with these. But also refining techniques. The beads aren't as perfect as you might want for a refined, finished hollow form, but I'm getting pretty good at cutting them in wet wood. These small forms are great for exploring designs as I can finish them in half the time as the 10" bowls and they dry in about two weeks, so there is a relatively quick turnaround. This is the sixth in a series.

Is there any/much distortion upon drying since you're turning it green? Of course that may make it look like a real basket.
