Woodruff key. What is a driftwood key?
My opinion is the D-Way beading tools are the best on the market if you buy.Thats nice, I want to either buy or make a beading tool. On this piece I almost think there are to many beads, sometimes less is more for an accent. But thats just my opinion. Everyone's eye and taste are different. But you sir are the master at beading.
Dyslexia has moments of laugher. Had not realized it at all until seeing Dave's post afresh. Thank you Sir.Woodruff key.
Thanks for the info on the "woodruff" key. Learned something new today! Regarding the Stihl gas powered blower, I have one that is several years old, BG 55. How does it compare to the BR models? Thanks! ChuckA driftwood key is a half moon shape, versus a square key used in many key-ways, like that holding drive pulleys in place like on a drill press and other belt drive tools. The driftwood key fits in a coved recess versus a straight trough.
The BR blower is a gas powered Stihl unit. They were some of the best blowers every made by Stihl because they were made with replaceable parts. Now there units are more along the line of disposable. I have a few, BR 380, 400 and 420 models. I was trying to revive an older unit that up and quit. It would back fire but not run, a common symptom of a sheared keyway. I replaced the key, but no luck, still back fires. So a timing issue is likely.
The BR models are backpack blowers and the BG series are handheld. Thanks for the info on the "woodruff" key. Learned something new today! Regarding the Stihl gas powered blower, I have one that is several years old, BG 55. How does it compare to the BR models? Thanks! Chuck
The spark plug arresters also need to be cleaned from time to time on both styles. The BR models are backpack blowers and the BG series are handheld.
I've got a BG-65 that is 20+ years old. Only thing it has ever needed is a new pull string and primer bulb.
What size beading tool do you need? I've got a couple extras.Thats nice, I want to either buy or make a beading tool. I honestly dont know what size I would need. I've thought about looking to see if there are replaceable inserts that I could make a tool for. What size beading tool do you need? I've got a couple extras.
A very good beading tool can be made from a worn down bowl gouge or spindle gouge
Or you can take an old hss drill bit and regrind (don’t let it get too got and ruin its temper) to make a beading tool. Use the bit just under the cutting end as some manufacturers only use hss for the actual cutting portion.I honestly dont know what size I would need. I've seen them like that before with the replaceable tipI honestly dont know what size I would need. I've thought about looking to see if there are replaceable inserts that I could make a tool for.
I like line 2.Variations on a theme. Playing around with color and slight variations. Sketching them like this also helps figure out ratios between different components. Been using 1/8" graph paper to match the 1/8" beads.View attachment 295008
Because of curvature, the designs don't transfer well to these small diameter test pieces, but they do give a god sense of how the colors work together.

Had to get something started on the bowl to really see the pattern/colors. Will probably finish the ring with the pattern on there now and then decide if it needs a little more detail. Want to keep this simple and clean, so this may be the final design. View attachment 295010
Now I understand the wide band of beads. My brain only saw the beads as an accent, but now I see the design and I get it. Very cool.Variations on a theme.
