What free wood did you find today?

Picked up some logs of one of my favorite woods today, Osage Orange.

Got a truck bed full of it. This was just the tip of the iceberg, the small pieces that I could lift by myself. The guy had a huge tree come down. I'll go back with a better plan one day soon.

This stuff is dang hard! The chain was sharp but it didn't want to cut. I split a few logs with wedges and that was a slow process as well.

Congrats! Gorgeous wood to work with, but it sure does crack and split a lot. Chuck

We have a hydro dam (actually several) here along the New River. This one was built in 1903ish. I talked to the guy that is over the dam and had heard about some old wood used in bearings so I asked about it. I was able to get four blocks of Lignum Vitae that was used as bearing pillow blocks in the plant. These are freakin heavy. They now use phenolic block due to the price. Picture heavy. This stuff cuts easier than I thought it would. It has a distinct scent to it too.
