What free wood did you find today?

Congrats! I need friends like that! Chuck
I only have one friend like that. I regularly get the good fruit woods, some wal- and chestnut and I have had some pistachio, some carob and even some rowan (swiss pear) (he's a professional orchard arborist). Recently got a large piece of apricot (in log form). Absolutely beautiful.

Kind of wish I had a way to load some of the larger pieces from this pecan that was brought down near my office. There are several pieces of the main trunk about 4’ tall and close to 3’ diameter that would be great to have… but it was hard enough getting this particular section of trunk that is showing some spalting loaded up with this other nice log section. Should be fun to get cut up, now just have to decide how I want to divide up this piece of the trunk.

Congrats! Great rounds you have there! Chuck

You only need to step on one of those seed balls in your bare feet and you'll remember sweet gum for the rest of your life. See that sidewalk? That's what I tried to avoid when I cut down the sweet gum in my front yard at our old house. The city was a "Tree City" unbeknownst to me, and they required a permit and inspection to cut down any tree. Since I didn't get either they fined me $150. One of those programs whose concept was good but implementation was absolutely horrible.

Some eucalyptus including this crotch piece. Was cut a week ago and cracked a bit but I sealed it and don’t think cracks go too deep.

that variety is very difficult to keep together. i've never had anything but major cracks and major warping while drying

box bark eucalyptus species like microtheca. are easier to get to finished without so much movement

Apparently this variety lives in a damp location. The extreme shrinkage tells me there was quite a a bit of water fell out of this as it dried. You will need to dry that extremely slowly to get smaller cracks ...
