What free wood did you find today?

I remember as a kid growing up in Washington State that the ocean beaches were littered with driftwood, of all imaginable sizes. Don't think in those days anyone cared if you took as much as you wanted. I also don't remember it being a thing to take driftwood home, other than small pieces for sentimental value. Chuck

removal of more than 2 pieces or anything over 4 lbs is a no-no in washington these days. my son checked the washington regulations, they seem to have it pretty much locked up.

Amazing. You'd think they'd be making it easy for folks to come clean up those areas.

logging practices have also been reigned in, regulated to the nth degree, and down right eliminated to such an extent that most rivers don't put much wood from logged areas into the ocean any more. mainly dead and fire damaged is the majority of what get's washed out currently

Except for, perhaps, logs floating in from other countries. Chuck

Hurricane Helene brought complete devastation to our area. I did fine this English Holly by the road and salvaged it.

I got around to milling the Holly the best I could with the chainsaw. I am glad I milled it when I did. It all had spalted very nicely! I have it stacked and drying now. Here are just 2 pieces of it! I am a lot more precise building turkey calls than milling with the chainsaw. :lol2:

Found this very very old Heart Pine lumber in town. I made a few calls and secured permission to get it…free! It took a many of trips to get it all! I estimate the wood to be roughly 225 years old, as the house it was torn down from was built in 1900. I have made a few turkey calls from it and they have turned out really good with awesome character from the nail holes.

What a great cache of old Pine! Congrats! Love the calls! Chuck

Nice score of heart pine @bnew17 I love that stuff! I'll bet that it is as hard as a rock. There is a lifetime of calls in that stack.

Haven’t gotten my free wood yet but got confirmation yesterday from the project manager. Local country club is remodeling its golf course and removing 240 of 2100 trees and I’ve arranged that our club gets access to whatever we want—various pines, eucalyptus including iron bark and red gum, many others! Will happen in August. I’m stoked!

Congrats! Let us know when you latch onto the wood. Chuck

Was driving by the local wood shop today and noticed the free wood box was out in their yard. Spun around and checked it out. Brought home 13 4x4 pieces, 1 6x6 piece and a couple 2x pieces of what I believe is cedar. Not sure I will have to check it out when I work on it.

Congrats! Wow, a free wood box with wood in it! Chuck

Looking forward to cutting up this big chunk of Maple. Wasn’t exactly free, but came from a local firewood production place close to home. The guys charge me minimal $$. They will cut to manageable size and load into my truck. I might have to go back and get the other half??

Roughed out another 12” bowl from these logs. Pretty stuff.

before i left oregon, i dropped this piece of curly redwood driftwood that i collected, off with a local chain saw carver in Bandon.
Folks needed a fish for the sign post on their property for the turn to their house,
it will be mounted on a stump piece of driftwood that's about 4 feet tall
original piece of driftwood was about 5 ft long
fish is about 30" long
wood was free but carving was fair but expensive
