What free wood did you find today?

My best friend owned the mulch yard. Heavy initial investment because of the equipment and land. But, made money hands over fist! He had a non-financial managing partner who started doing shady things, and he decided to divest. During time he owned it, I was allowed free reign over the mountains of wood waiting to be ground up. It was a giddy time!

I've had the same problem with the tree services. Once on their truck or trailer, its gonna go where its gonna go. A few will leave some pieces on the ground, but I better be there before they leave, because their usual agreement with the landowner is for them to haul it away.

I've cut firewood at a tree guy's log yard (burn pile) for years. A lot of good albeit short logs came in there. Most too large to handle. Some beautiful huge crotch pieces of walnut were pushed onto the burn pile because I didn't have a big enough saw. I did manage to get some smaller logs but they sat for years because my saw went down. Now they're badly cracked and are destined for firewood.

Now, walnut doesn't come into the log yard. He made a deal to sell all walnut to a guy with a mill.

Mesquites that had been down in our camp for a bunch of years. #1 son fished it out of the brush. These two pictures are the same tree. There’s another one just like it. I needed one more thing to do. Should make some nice slabs.

How many shots did it take to fell that tree?

I’m not sure… both of the trees were in the camp area. If they hold true to form, I anticipate finding bullets, nails, maybe even horseshoes. I have found junk in every tree in that camp that has died. Cost me some chains and saw blades. I’ll start with my oldest blades and resharpen as I hit stuff. The garage apartment in the background was built in 1930. There’s another house that was there when my Great Grandfather bought the place in 1930. My Great grandmother told him she wasn’t going to live in the old one so he built the apartment. The supports are hand hewn live oak 6x6s. It’s due for a remodel . I did it once in 1984. Needs it again. Over the years all the trees around there caught some bullets, some more than a few. I hate to mill fence line trees or yard trees… They always have something in them. Up in Kerrville we’ve found rocks in crotches. Folks would set a rock in the fork and the years would grow around it just waiting for some schmuck to find it with a sawmill.

So, to answer the question I’ll have to mill it to find out how many shots it took...

Not common in the coastal plains of Texas - them probably be diamondbacks!
just so you know it was a play on words, timber=tree rattler=gun
or something vaguely along those lines

i guess i should have spelled it in tennesssiaann

and though that tree is crooked as a snake, not sure diamond back fits

Unfortunately all them whoevers moving into Mid TN are rubbing off on me and making Lil Mikey not as sharp - he's having to stay under his rock more and more so's he doesn't cause harm.

sissoo

if you sand it you'll find the grey as a die/stainView attachment 275082View attachment 275083

East Indian rosewood most likely- should have a spicy sweet aroma. If you ever part/sell the leg(s)- tag me.

Arn

You’re right Trev, sanded a bit of the leg to verify and no sweet smell. Its mostly black stain and not worth the salvage effort for the heartwood so it’s going back to the dump Fri unless you still want it @Arn213

That is too bad and I have had sets with those gray black on EI rose. I would have re-used it for double door vertical handles for inside and outside. Thanks for the offer and I will pass John.
