Received delivery of new DeWalt 16-gallon portable vacuum today. The motor in my old Shopvac 16-gallon vacuum burned out about a week ago. Replacement motors were ridiculously expensive, so I decided to just purchase a new vacuum. About a month ago I had just purchased replacement cannisters for the Shopvac. I will post separately to see if anyone wants them for a trade of something. Chuck IMG_3271.jpeg

Seems like many supporting items like this are just cheaper to replace. Sometimes they are long lived, which sometimes surprises me, but no more “repairs.” I laugh inwardly at the last printer I bought. Found an open box item at Wallyworld and the new printer, now 6 years old or so, was cheaper than replacement ink cartridges at the time.

When mine burned out I called the support line, and they sent me a new motor. Lifetime warranty, no receipt necessary just sent them a picture.
So, I bought a used one at a garage sale for $2.00 that wasn't running. Same thing same results.

I’ve been wanting one of these for a while. Needed a saw that would cut thick slabs in a single pass. My buddy’s Makita has a 7” depth of cut but is way underpowered. I’m hoping this one will cut 3-4” tropical hardwoods with ease. We’ll see.

Bought these back in the 80s when I was doing cabinet work and they neva let me down til the pad came apart the other day. Good sanders made in USA back then, parts look the same but now hecho in china. Other one still seems solid but for $10 will replace anyway.

Had to trim so the clamp can grip the 1/4 sheet of paper, at least the holes line up proper.

Just don’t make things like they used to. We’ve become a disposable society in many respects. Chuck

Stopped by the mailbox after the gym this morning and found a surprise package from our resident cholla scavenging, flint knapping desert-rat Jerry aka @Nubsnstubs . Sometime ago I made the mistake of asking Jerry if cholla is solid enough to slice into thins for box sides or lids, etc. He said it's as solid as most woods. And then he proceeded to slice a bunch and send it to me. This box is full of sliced up cholla, palo verde, and another reddish wood I don't know the name of. Live edge, clean edge, you name it, it's in the box. I don't know how I'll repay Jerry but I'll have to think of something. Ideas are already starting to ping around in my brainpan. This is way over the top generous.

Betcha I wouldn't. It has nothing to do with his work. He builds beautiful stuff, but I'm 79 years old, my house and property looks worse than a junkyard with all the crap I've been collecting over the years, and I feel sorry for the individual who will have to clean up this place. So, If I had stuff built by other people, it would probably end up being dumped it the trash buy the lucky individual who has to clean up my mess.
If I was 50 years old, you can bet I'd be sitting out by the mailbox awaiting a box from Doug or anyone. ............ Nubs

I totally understand about not wanting to accumulate stuff you really don't have a use for and wondering where it'll all end up or who if anyone wants it. Doesn't make me feel any better about you giving me so much free wood and not being able to repay the favor. But when I do make something I'll for sure take photos. Thanks again Jerry.

I watched this video in early November and thought that this might be of help in my shop. I'm not great at marking / cutting angles and reading my standard Swanson square can be a challenge at times. By the time that I ordered the news was out and the SmartSquare company was swamped with orders after lots of others also watched the video.

It wasn't cheap, but I think it will pay for itself with usefulness in the years to come. It's also a super cool, innovative tool, in my opinion. Made entirely in the USA is a big plus in my book.

Bandsaw guides.

I'm normally not a fan of roller bearing guides on band saws. I can make an exception for this one for using narrow blades.

Recently the local woodworking club had a Saturday workshop on making band saw reindeer which I attended as I've watched many YouTube video's on the topic and think that it is a cool way to make small, interesting things quickly. The workshop was great so I went at it later that day at home. It just didn't work well. My PM 143 14" band saw has new tires but I've never put a blade on it that was less than 1/2". After a couple of hours of trying to dial it in with a 3/16" blade I gave up. Probably put the blade back on 15 times before I walked away. It does have new rubber tires, new thrust bearings, and freshened OEM metal guide blocks.

Most people who work with thin blades use the Carter Stabilizer Guide bearing so I looked up the right part number for my early 1970's vintage saw and placed the order. This was here when I got back home this evening. I can't wait to try it out and finish the reindeer!

I really don't have a need for one, but after watching the video, I want one! If I was doing construction, or more flat work I'd probably eventually get one, but can't justify it when 95+% is lathe work.

Lots of innovation in that little square.
