My boxes

Here is my latest box. I is made with figured Maple with a quilted Maple top panel. The dimensions are 8 1/4”x 7 1/4” x 2 3/8” tall over all. I t has a divided bottom with a lift off tray on top of the rails. The finish is Watco oil and buffed out with a hard wax. The hinges are Brusso stop hinges. Well my wife saw it and wanted one for her desk. This is that box. It is made from tiger striped Maple. The dimensions are 5 1/4” square by 6” tall. The lid on top fits on the tissue box. It was finished with a drying oil and buffed out with a hard wax. View attachment 291007View attachment 291009

Here is my latest box. It has been in process for quite awhile as I really didn’t have a plan on the design. I finally finished this morning.
It is made from some high end Koa I collected over a course of years from a friend of mine who ran a mill in Kona.
The box dimensions are 7”x8”x4 1/4” tall.

I drool.

Your wood might profit from slightly more sanding. Especially figured wood like this needs to be sanded properly to fully show its beauty. A few spots of tear out are visible.

It did take me a few minutes to notice because the wood is so damn gorgeous.
 
I appreciate your comment. The body was sanded up to something like 600 grit but there are some tear outs .Koa can be a bit brittle sometimes.

Yeah. Koa can do that. Especially when so highly figured. It might be time to get a small drum sander for situations like these. Or get an old infill smoother and use that. They can finish figured anything without any problems. Also leave a slightly better surface than sanding. The camber is important though. Otherwise you will get tracks.
 
Here is my next box. The wood species is unknown. The top section is 6X6x2 3/4” deep. The bottom section is 10x6x2”tall the drawer is 1” deep. Finished with Watco oil and hard wax IMG_3149.webp IMG_3150.webp IMG_3151.webp IMG_3152.webp
 
Here is my next box. I believe it is made from Sapele. The dimensions are 5 1/4”x5 1/4”x2 1/8” tall. The finish is multiple brushed on coats of shellac buffed out with 0000 steel wool and buffed out with dark wax. IMG_3177.webp IMG_3180.webp

I like it a lot. Very understated. It doesn’t take control of your vision like some overly decorated projects can.
 
Here my latest box. I made this one while waiting for the glue to dry on another box. I saw some scrap wood and thought it might be a cool looking box. It is made from figured Maple. The dimensions are 4 1/2x 2 1/2x 2 1/8 tall. It was finished with danish oil and buffed out with clear wax. IMG_3188.webp IMG_3187.webp IMG_3189.webp
 
So here is the box I was waiting on. It is made from plum wood. The dimensions are 5 1/8” x 3 7/8” x 3”tall overall. Finished with a heavy coat of shellac and buffed out with 0000 steel wool.
The thing about this box is I saw someone offering small plumb wood limbs. I went and took it all and dried it. One of the things I do when I get free wood is to make a box out of it and give it to person. People like that.

The only drawback to smaller items is that it's much harder to show off figure. Great job in a small space there.
