I usually make smaller hinges but they are so fragile. I decided to try thicker ones. I think somewhere in between next time.

Could you post a few close-ups and maybe one or two showing the end grain. I get a strong "Ash" feel when looking at the box, not elm.

There is a street near me that is lined with what they call fire Elm. There was one tree a fire that burned all the moss and scorched the bark. It needed to be completely removed as it was so badly damaged. I happened to go by it and saw some small logs. I asked if I could have it and they said sure. The next day and picked up what I could handle. So yes it is elm.

I think you're on to something with the wooden hinges. I'd look into how else to attach them so those big screw heads don't show. Even screwed from the inside would be better than showing from the outside. A good glue joint is stronger or at least as strong as the wood itself. Even a wooden dowel sanded flush would be less obtrusive than metal wood screws.

Nah. It’s good. Maybe not up to your standard but definitely something you can give away. Maybe to someone at work.

Never heard of fire elm. Must be a local name. Guess it was a massive tree being your box looks to lack any heartwood.

I stand corrected. I just looked it up again and the tree is actually a flame ash tree. Thanks for setting me straight.

If it is, I'd like to buy 2 samples from you. Looking for a 1/4 sawn sample and a flatsawn sample. Samples finish at 3" wide x 6" long x 1/2" thick. Something a touch bigger would be great so I can work it and get a feel for the wood after it seasons.
