I think it helps if during the design stage they incorporate a chicane or something to slow down approaching traffic. That usually helps create some gaps as well as slows down people who think it's a challenge to blow through the roundabout at highway speed.

Here are satellite views of the two I mentioned. Galesburg's is much larger with three lanes. One inner to travel around, and two outer if you are going through.

The one in Monmouth is much smaller, and not as easy to navigate. Look at the size of the cars between the two images.

Oh, my goodness, not that size. Ours is so small the tractor trailers have quite often straightened the turn out. It is the bare minimum radius to turn a semi trailer . The inner curb was broken within a month.

I think the concept of a roundabout is generally good, but there are a couple of inherent problems. First is the physical layout. I go on road trips all over the U.S., and I’ve seen the full gamut of size and complexity. In the majority of them, the layout is too small, often with narrowing curbing approaching the roundabout, and often with turns that are tedious to negotiate, and Heaven help you if you are pulling a trailer, or catastrophically worse yet driving a semi. I went through one in Central California last year that was exceptionally complex, with inner circles and outer circles, and it was on a major truck route, and it was on an exceptionally busy day. It was a challenge just to not get hit! The second fundamental problem is the drivers and their knowledge of how to proceed through a roundabout. When I was 16 there were no roundabouts to my knowledge, and so there was no instruction in the school or in the manuals on how to go through them. I haven’t checked, but surely this is being taught now. In any event, whether drivers have had instruction or not, the majority of drivers do not appear to know the rules, or choose to ignore them. Bottom line, it’s a jungle out there at the present time! Chuck

My day has been really good. It all started yesterday when I finally got insurance for my 2000 Chevy, got a 3 day permit and took it over for emission testing. Of course, it failed yesterday and I get the reasons for the failure which was #3 cylinder coil or plug wire, or even the plug. Today, I pulled the wire off the plug, started the truck, and didn't feel a miss, but I could hear the spark clicking on what it was resting on, so grabbed the wire and plugged it back onto the spark plug. The Check Engine light was not on, so I decided I would got for a long drive to see it the light would come back on.
I went about 40 miles from home, and my low fuel light came on. CRAP! I'm supposed to get 330 miles per tank. I only had 190 miles. Normally, when the light comes on, I usually have 5 gallons left. I turned around and headed back into Tucson. I did stop at a store 20 miles outside of Tucson, and only got 2 gallons at 3 bucks a gallon.
From there I was going straight to a gas station that was 40 cents cheaper, and then head to emissions again for another test. I took 23.9 gallons of gas and only had 231 miles. That was 9.6 miles per gallon, where in the past that truck usually got about 14 mpg. It's been sitting for 13 months 13 days, so probably bad gas.
Got to emissions, and the truck passed with flying colors. I was a happy camper. Next was to get it to DMV and get it re registered. About 2 miles from the DMV the Check Engine light came on. It's a good thing I didn't go another 4 miles on the trip I started as I'm pretty sure the light would have been on when I was at the emissions place. Anyway, I got my truck back on the road and will retire my 79 Silverado for the time being. The wheel pattern is the same as my 72 Toyota LandCruiser, so the 79 will be on blocks for a short time as the wheels will be on my Land Cuiser. I'll drag it to my driveway concrete pad and start the process of rebuilding the engine. Can't wait.......... Nubs

A 2 day late birthday celebration. Went to Denver and tried an old restaurant I knew from the 90’s that I had been back to a few times. Supposed to have great green chili but it wasn’t great. Good…..not great. Then on Downtown to the historic Paramount Theater to see Mac MacAnally. If you don’t know, he was one of Jimmy Buffett’s right hand men. What I didn’t know is that he was playing with Scotty Emerick, right hand man to Toby Keith. So it was a night of remembrance, honor, and as Jimmy said, “keep the party going!” Just a fun evening that we don’t do very often.

This was actually the last 3 days. I haven't been riding my triumph bonneville as much as I thought I would. The guys I used to ride with ride on the weekends and I'm very busy at church Friday thru Sunday day, so I miss my riding opportunity. So I had this genius idea, sell the bike while I can still get some good money for it, buy a used boat which I'll use more since I'm real close to the lake, and buy a big used road scooter so I can still do a ride when I want too.
So the buyer brought a uhaul, we loaded it up. He's going to put a side car on it which is very cool.

I found a used honda silverwing 600cc scooter and picked it up, it'll do over 100mph, not that I want to go that fast but it is highway capable.

And today I picked up this beauty of a used boat. It's vintage but the cleanest one I have ever seen. Came with a stack of receipts and it has a rebuilt motor with 200 hours on it. The seller gave me so much stuff for it that it's going to take me a day just to go thru everything, totally turn key and needs nothing, even has a new prop. 23 foot, actually makes my f250 look small, lol.

Made the 3 hour trip home. Has new wheel bearings on all four wheels and new 10 ply tires.

Cover could probably be replaced but it's good enough for now.

This is a 1972 slickcraft, built solid and heavy with all handlaid fiberglass. Boat weighs about 4,000 lbs. They where made in Holland, MI. The boat spent its whole life there on lake Michigan, a big water boat for sure. I'm so happy to have scored this vintage boat. This was the last of the good ones, after amf bought them out the quality went down.

The two happiest days of a boat owner...the day they buy it and the day they sell it.
So they say, but I have many boats and never really wanted to sell any of them. Never really spent a lot of money on them other than the payment on a new boat. Like new cars today I would never buy a new boat. Also I do most of the repairs myself so there's that. It's a small block ford v8, they run forever! I've caught a lot of fish and had a lot of good memories on my boats. This one should serve me well in my retirement.

Congrats! Important thing now is to truly incorporate boating into your life! Chuck
